I made them with walnuts (no pecans in the house) and sunflower seeds ( no whole flax seeds). They were yummy! Now I'm trying malt syrup in place of molasses, poppy seeds instead of flax seeds, and dried cherries instead of cranberries.

I grew up in LA but have lived nearly 20 years in Seattle. In-N-Out Burger all the way. I coached a high school basketball team locally and we used to take the kids to Dick's on Lake City Way. Pretty much every time the place was dirty - grease on the counter tops and the fries reeked (sp) with grease. The burger was half way between a Kidd Vally and White Castle. I've known employees at both outfits. Dicks can't hold a candle to the way In-N-Out employees are treated. No contest. And let's not forget about what constitutes the oil Dick's uses - ick!

THANK YOU for putting this in writing, Sonja! I am terrified of making pie b/c of the crust...maybe this will alleviate some of my fear. Plus I love the vodka addition...both steps!

I think the addition iof vodka is a nice little bit of insurance for novice pie makers. Like how some people add vinegar. The amount of liquid called for in the recipe above makes the dough quite soft (not crumbly) and easy to roll out. If you added the same amount of liquid, but all water, I think the dough would be too tough.
